Economy, Media and Millennials Will Drive 2015 Recruiting Trends
Economy, Media and Millennials Will Drive 2015 Recruiting TrendsEconomy, Media and Millennials Will Drive 2015 Recruiting TrendsEconomy, Media and Millennials Will Drive 2015 Recruiting Trends RossheimIf the economy continues its upward trajectory in 2015, recruiters will find themselves in greater demand while facing a steeper challenge in closing deals with top talent.Top 2015 recruitingtrends will include the ever-growing influence of Millennialsas that generations oldest members hit mid-career, and the rise of fine-grained recruitment marketing in many Internet genres.Good candidates will be even harder to land in 2015. As long as unemployment continues to moderate, talent will feel the power. The marketplace for employees is getting stronger and stronger, says Jim Link, chief HR officer at staffing firm Randstad. If you have an in-demand skill set, youre in a good place to change positions.Candidates will be mora open to considering a move. Feeling that the job market and econom y are less scary, more workers will think about leaving the security of a known employer.People are more willing to look around, and theyre getting a lot more creative about networking, says Julie Desmond, IT and software engineering recruiting manager at search firm George Konik Associates. To succeed in the talent market, employers must be proactive. Gone are the days of the early 2010s when employers could just post jobs on their own career sites and wait for many qualified candidates to queue up. Companies will need to be very competitive in 2015, says Chuck Pappalardo, manager director of Trilogy Search. This means fast-tracking hiring processes, starting talent searches sooner rather than later, and budgeting in accordance with what will be a dramatic upward pressure on salaries and benefits. It should also mean a greater reliance on external recruiters.More clients will face the music. More and more companies will decide that now is the time to pull the trigger on new hires - even if at greater cost.Clients are holding back less, and theyre more open to relocating candidates, says Desmond. A big client said to me, Im starting to realize that well have to raise our pay rates for 2015. Market demographics will drive recruitment. In 2015 companies will hire with target markets in mind, whether generational or linguistic. Were looking to sell our product into Spanish speaking homes and businesses, says Jamie Thomas, vice president of talent acquisition at Combined Insurance. So I brought in a recruiting program manager for key markets like Hispanic communities.Recruitment marketing will put a finer point on segments. To get noticed, employers will use tech to target key candidate pools. Our recruiting efforts have a new focus on technology CRM, customized outreach, and targeted microsites and landing pages, says Thomas.Micro-targeting will hit the big time. Talent communities - cultivated networks with hard-to-tag skill sets - are all the rage, says Mark P hillips, CEO of search firm HireEducation. In 2015 the trend will be getting your message to every member of a talent community - immediately.Millennials will demand a plan. The leading edge of the Millennial generation is reaching midcareer status, and theyre making demands that lean, relatively flat organizations may find difficult to fulfill. Millennials now represent the largest segment of the American workforce, and they want to have a designated career path, says Link. The contingent model is moving into new sectors. Whether as high-priced consultants or low-wage temps, more workers are interested in doing tasks for a variety of employers, says Link. This is happening not just in IT but also in engineering and even finance and accounting.Companies try before they buy - with an added risk. Temp-to-perm will continue to be a tempting strategy for employers that have the power to draw lots of viable candidates.Companies are bringing on new employees as temps for six months to tr y them out before putting them on the payroll and adding benefits, says Lynne Sarikas, director of the MBA Career Center at Northeastern University. But employers and recruiters should put themselves in the shoes of candidates If you want a permanent position and there are more and more full-time opportunities in the market, why would you settle for glorified temping?References and reputation will matter. References are regaining their reputation for providing qualitative validation when screening candidates. Employers are putting greater emphasis on what previous managers and co-workers say about job candidates, says career consultant Dana Manciagli. Technology, such as SkillSurvey, is changing the way references are being contacted via an online approach.

Phone Scripts That Work for Sales
Phone Scripts That Work for SalesPhone Scripts That Work for SalesWhen you answer the phone and a telemarketer on the other end starts obviously and robotically readingfrom a script, the urge to say no thanks and hang up the phone is almost irresistible. Few things will turn off a prospect faster than hearing a salesperson recite blandly from a phone script. But that doesnt mean that using a script equates to poor cold calling. Here are some tips for calling scripts that can work. Phone Scripts That Sound Natural Work Best Think back to the last really good movie you saw. The actors seemed to speak and react spontaneously. Everything they said and did sprang naturally from what was happening around them. And yet those actors were certainly using a script The difference is that their scripts were written using language that sounded natural, and the actors were delivering those carefully chosen words while conveying the appropriate emotions. Your own acting skills may leid be on a levelwith Hollywoods best, but you do have one benefit that they dont share. You can write your own scripts using words and phrases that come naturally to you Theres no need to act if you have a well-written phone script because the words on the page are the same words youd be likely to say spontaneously. But by writing those words down ahead of time, you wont have to worry about losing your train of thought or fumbling your pitch. Most Phone Scripts Fail Because They Are Written like Sales Literature Those smooth, polished, convincing phrases work in a brochure or even an email, but spoken out loud they will stilted and artificial or worse, slick and sales-y. Phone scripts should sound just like you do when you talk casually. As you write the script, stick to words you use every day in normal conversation, including pauses, sentence fragments and even the occasional uh. If you have trouble writing a script in this style, tape yourself while you ad-lib a cold call, and then pla y back the tape and write down what you said exactly as you said it. Then use this core content as the basis for a script that will sound like you do on your very best cold calls. If youre new to sales and an experienced colleague is kind enough to share her phone script with you, be wary of making substantial changes. A script thats highly successful for your fellow salesperson is packed with useful sales techniques and persuasive language. Youre better off practicing with that script until it sounds natural instead of adopting your own wording. Once youve had some experience with cold calling and know what works, you can give yourself a little more leeway to change existing scripts. Good Phone Scripts Should Include Every Part of the Call A good phone script should include every parte of the call, from Hello to Goodbye. As you encounter common cold call objections, you can draft your favorite responses and include them at the bottom of the script. Always keep a pen handy when you call so that you can jot down any new objections you encounter along with your response. Even the best phone script will get stale eventually. Youll come up with new and more effective ways to grab the prospects interest and get that appointment. Or a colleague might lend you her cold calling script, with some powerful language that you want to use yourself. And as your company launches new products and changes existing ones, youll need to modify your benefits phrases to match the new product details. The best way to decide which changes to keep and which to discard is to try them out. When you have a significant change youre considering for your script, use the new wording on 25 cold calls... then switch to the old script and make 25 more calls. If the new version gets you more appointments than the old version during this test, you should keep the change.

10 Insider Lessons No One in the Business World Will Teach You
10 Insider Lessons No One in the Business World Will Teach You It took me years to comprehend why people functioned so differently in the corporate world from the way I functioned or expected them to function. On the one hand, my clarity of thought, determination, ambitiousness, andcreativity helped me excel in my careerbecause these traits were highly valued in the competitive business culture on the other hand, I found that when it came to people skills particularly networking, leveraging influence, and positioning my value ordnungsprinzip welches very different from the one I met in the business world.Turns out my parents didnt raise a kid who was ready to face the cutthroat corporate environment, which is typically the case for manyfresh grads who come from similarlyprotective and safe backgrounds.Whether we like it or elend, the corporate world is the real world, and we have to learn how to navigate it successfully. To help you get up to speed much more quickly than I did, Im sharing some of theunwritten rules of the game. Nobody will tell you these things. Most of us have to figure them out on our own but reading this guide can give you a head start on the competition.1. Your Worth to the Company IsTied to Your Last Performance EvaluationIm not kidding. Even if you were a top performer for five years in a row, youre doomed if you didnt manage to get a top rating this year, too, for whatever reason.I know, not all companies are the same. You may think that in your amazing company, managersreally sit down and evaluate all your results, compare them to your peers, iron out the differences in workloads and responsibilities, and give you a fair assessment. That may be true for some, but many of you arein for a rude awakening.2. Some People Are Only Nice to You When You Are Influential or They Need YouOnce your level ofinfluence changes or they no longer need you, so does their behavior.Sadly, it is often the case that someon e who became your best friend wont even say so much as Hi once your role changes. As if that werentenough to shock the living heck out of you, that same person may soon be back on your team and have the audacity to treat you like a friend again.Ive experienced this twice, and I am still baffled as to how people can manage such extreme levels of duplicity.Maybe they think I suffer from amnesia?3. Promotions Are leid Linked to Performance They Are Linked to the Perception of Your PerformanceWe all view thingsthrough our own lenses. My map of the world could be drastically different from your map because of ourdiffering values, beliefs, experiences, and cultures. When you are working in a diverse, multiethnic organization staffed bypeople from all sorts of cultures and backgrounds, differences in perception can matter a great deal.Perception is reality. If you want to advance, it is imperative that you portray the right pictureof your work and results to the decision-makers who matter .4. Being in the Right Place at the Right Time Can Matter More Than ResultsWe all know that fortunate know-it-all who got promoted before everyone else despite theirmediocre results. How did they manage to do that?Building your image, networking, and exposure can get you places you never even dreamedof. Dont rely on your boss to do it for you. Create a network of influential leaders, sponsors, and mentors who know you and your achievements. Then,as soon as an opportunity opens up,youll be top of mindwithall the right decision-makers.5. When Youre a Star, Most of Your Mistakes Will Be ForgivenI have had the privilege of making some potentially career-lethal mistakes that went overlookedbecauseI was delivering results and management perceived me as a star.At the same time, Ive seen cases where management wasjust fishing for mistakes so they could kiss an employee goodbye. The key is to be diligent and cautious at all times, especially when you are not completelymeetingexpectations. Ev en the slightest issue can get you into trouble.6. High-Paid Opinions Hold More Weight than Low-Paid FactsThere are the actual data and facts, and then there are opinions and positioning. The opinions of higher-paid (and higher-ranking) people matter more in most organizations. Even when lower-paid (and lower-ranking) people have data and facts on their sides, top management has the right andauthority to do as they please. The earlier you learn this, the better.7. Sometimes Its Okay to Dissent and Sometimes It IsntMost companies encourage straight talk and want you to speak your mind. What they dont tell you is that, if you speak your mindtoo often, you might be labeled as negative, cynical, or narcissistic. There will be times when you have to choose between being in the right and being employed. Before you blurt out your opinion, ask yourselfwhat is at stake. How could your opinion be perceived? Is there a conflictbetweenwhat you are saying and what the company wants?Be strategic i f youre going to disagree. Back up your message with data, and deliver itin a non-confrontational tone. As you may know, its not the words that get people off their chairs its the tone.8.Theres a Fine Line Between Gaining Experience and Growing RustyYou think that becauseyou have 10 years of experience in your category of business, you arenot only highly valuable to your company but also a great catch for your competitors? Well, think againIn those 10 years, you have been pretty much doing the same thing over and over again, working with almost the same exact people the whole time. Have you ever delivered truly slam-dunk results? Why would anyone be interested in you over the other guywho has worked in three different organizations, rolled up his sleeves to deliverin every role hes held, and led his teams to stellar results? The lesson here Dont get rusty.9. Never Associate Your Self-Worth With Your Position or PerformanceIt feelsgreat when you are the champ but what what happens whe n you arent? And there will be times when you arent. Even if youre the next Mark Zuckerberg or Steve Jobs, you are bound to fail along the way.How do you react when you fail? Do you tie your self-worth and self-esteemtoyour job? You will be absolutely miserable if you do. You have to keep in mind that there are many factors outside of your direct influence that determine your success. If you were to beat yourself up for failing in those ares,it wouldnt be fair. Take pride in all the other roles you have in life when the going gets tough at work.10. It Is Easy to Thrive on Mediocrity Dont Fall for itDont be a victim of your own success. After youvespent years learning all the rules of the game, youll know how to play it with precision. At that point, it will become easy to fall into the trap of mediocrity. So what if you dont have stellar results? You can frame it otherwise. So what if you got passed over for a promotion? You have the right sponsors, and theywill look out for younext year. So what if youve been on a dud assignment for the last three years? At least you have a stable, high-paying job. This mindset is a kiss of death. Its detrimental to your learning and growth it is the path thatensures you get rusty. You dont have to. Instituteazero-tolerance policy for mediocrity, no matter how good youve gotten at playing the game. Push your boundaries and break the monotony.Dont struggle like I did. Give yourself a leg up in the business world. Learn these rules today, and really take them to heart. You may feel overwhelmed and even a little despondent right now, but youll thank me later.A version of this article originally appeared on Entrepreneur.Samia Hasan is the founder of Direction Dose.

10 Skills that Look Great on Any Resume
10 Skills that Look Great on Any Resume10 Skills that Look Great on Any ResumeShowcase ansicht onyour resume andincreaseyour chances of gettingthe interview.Depending on the specific position youre applying for, your resume is going to vary when it comes to skills. For example, if youre applying for a teaching position, it wont be helpful that you can drive a forklift. However, there are some skills that are considered universal. And while youdont want to load up your resume with filler, or buzzword skills that every applicant has, these skills will actually help you stand out from the crowd.Industry Awareness. It doesnt matter what industry you work in, there are always going to be changes. Your strength is to know what changes are happening at the time, and being able to adapt. Bonus points if youre able to predict changes that might occur. A great way to start doing this is to track your industry in the news, through groups on LinkedIn, and at networking events.Negotiation and Per suasion.Again, these are skills that can help you in alfruchtwein any industry. In addition to coming in handy in sales situations, you can also use themto help calm down a rowdy client, motivate a team or bring about positive changes in the office. There are so many different possibilities that these traits are really invaluable. Leadership. Just because you will have someone managing you doesnt mean you dont need leadership skills. Leadership means being able to take direction, and working through any problems that may arise on your own. It also means being able to take charge in a group setting with co-workers. While most of the time you may only be leading yourself, youll be able to prove yourself as a valuable employee with a skill like this.Research Skills. You arent going to know the answer to every problem that comes your way, nor are you expected to. However, the less you go to your manager with problems, the more they will see you as a competent employee. Being able to do yo ur own research, whether it be on software, clients, or simple troubleshooting tasks can be invaluable in the workplace.Adaptability.Piggy-backing off the idea that you need to be aware of changes, you also need to be able to take those changes and run with them. Change can be hard, but in most industries its necessary. Adaptability can mean something as simple as moving where your desk is to switching over to a new software system in the office. Managers dont want to hold employees hands through each change that occurs.Interpersonal Skills. In most industries, being able to be outgoing, friendly, and talkative can be very beneficial. Even when it comes to employees who work in solitary positions, having these skills can increase earning potential and help land better positions. In the case that you find you are more introverted, it is helpful to think of yourself as having two modes work mode, where you are outgoing and helpful, and off mode where you can stick to yourself.Communic ation Skills. Some of the top problems in any office stem from poor communication skills. Whether you are a leader or a low-level employee, you need to be able to communicate your wants, needs, and desires. In the case that you are in management, communication skills are absolutely crucial. You cant run a functional team if they do not know exactly what you want from them. Work Ethic. You will often hear many employers lamenting about how difficult it is to find employees who actually want to work. This is a skill that is invaluable to any employer. You can demonstrate your work ethic by showing up to work everyday and on time. Put in your hours getting your projects done and on deadline. Many employers will often choose the reliable, mediocre employee over the unreliable employee who does better work.Professionalism.Being able to show that you are serious about a job can be one of the best steps towards securing an offer. You should be able to be responsible and fair in all of your business-related decisions. To both employers and co-workers you will be seen as mature and self-confident when you can behave this way. Willingness to Learn.Again, this stems from the idea that all industries are constantly changing, and employees need to be able to adapt if they want to stay in the game. This doesnt mean that you need to learn about everything overnight and show a profound knowledge in the new subject area. You simply need to show that you are willing to learn and will put in a genuine effort. How to Transition From Solo Expert to Effective Manager
How to Transition From Solo Expert to Effective ManagerHow to Transition From Solo Expert to Effective ManagerSomething interesting happens on the road to developing as a manager. Your technical expertise- the knowledge and skills that enabled you to excel as an individual contributor- is decidedly less valuable at this new level. Unfortunately, many managers miss this point and burn a large amount of energy striving to remain the smartest person in the room. Smart managers learn quickly to draw upon the expertise of gruppe members to build team and group performance and support individual development. In other words, smart managers learn to let go of being the expert on every topic and develop new experts on their teams. What Got You Here Wont Cut It Moving Forward For many first-time managers accustomed to serving as the expert in their roles as individual contributors, letting go of this part of their workplace persona is difficult. People who are highly competent at their job s naturally associate their technical or specialized acumen with their success- it becomes part of their professional and personal identity. What they fail to recognize is that the rules of survival and success have changed- with less emphasis placed on their specialized knowledge and mora placed on their ability to deliver business results through others. The failure to understand and adapt to this new reality creates a wide variety of problems for the manager and team members. When the Manager Acts as the Expert, Stress Fractures Appear The manager who insists on retaining the role of expert adds stress to her team in a number of ways. Some of the most common include Team members perceive their technical expertise is devalued by the managers insistence on supplying all of the answers or always having the final answer.Instead of building a team-like atmosphere, the manager as expert reinforces a hierarchical environment.Individuals grow resentful over time as they recognize the ir ideas and opinions dont count. This resentment manifests either as aggressive behavior or, what the manager interprets as poor attitudes.Personal initiative fades as team members become accustomed to the manager supplying all of the answers. Overall performance suffersas the as the groups working environment turns sour and as the manager increasingly becomes a bottleneck, with team members waiting for him to opine on every issue. When New Managers Must Sink or Swim The transition from individual contributor to manager is challenging. The burnout or churn rate of first-time managers is unacceptably high across many firms in large part because there is little advance training offered, and even less post-promotion coaching. Many managers are left to sink or swim with their new duties. When faced with a high degree of ambiguity about their new role, they naturally revert to what has worked for them historically their ability to navigate tough problems by drawing upon their specia lized knowledge. If you find yourself living through a similar scenario, here are sixideas to help smooth the transition from expert to manager without introducing the stress fractures described above. Six Ideas to Help You Transition From Solo Expert to Effective Manager Rethink Your Mission As a manager, your new mission is to create a working environment with your team that encourages them to do their best work. Your technical expertise is never the focal point. Enabling your team members to develop and then showcase their expertise goes to the heart of your mission.Focus on Cultivating Trust Continually asserting your technical expertise fights the trust building process. Instead, ask questions and encourage individuals to offer and pursue their ideas. Your willingness to let them experiment and even stumble showcases your trust and support. Teach Theres a difference between co-opting the work of your team members supplying the answers or countermanding ideas and teaching th em what you know. Managers that teach, particularly at the front-line levels, are supporting the development of their team members in a compelling manner.Resist Your Instinct to Answer and Instead, Ask One Simple Question The most important question a manager can deploy on a daily basis when team members reach out for guidance is Im leid sure. What do you think you should do? Your instinct is of course to answer the initial inquiry based on your technical expertise. In many instances, the answer might be painfully obvious to you. Nonetheless, your best course of action is to suppress the urge to offer an answer and ask for their ideas. By doing this, you stimulate critical thinking, and you show that you trust people to think and act for themselves. Promote Team and Individual Learning A key part of succeeding in your mission to create a working environment that encourages growth and performance is to model the behaviors essential for learning. Invest in your team members where poss ible. Send them to technical or subject matter training. Give them time to attend educational seminars or webinars. Build a team resource library. Encourage them to teach-back to the group what they learn from their endeavors.Promote Team and Individual Learning In addition to the above actions, it is essential for you to offer positive feedback to individuals or groups who exhibit initiative and tackle the tough problems in the workplace. Make your feedback valuable by specifying the positive behaviors and the impact they had on results. Rinse and repeat on a daily basis. The Bottom-Line Success as a manager is less about your technical acumen and more about your ability to draw out the best in others. The expertise that served you so well in the past must now take a back seat to new skills focused on supporting and developing others. Start by reframing your professional mission and then concentrate on cultivating a new layer of skills that will support your growth as a manage r and leader.
